We have all been working hard to be able to continue to offer routine eye care during the pandemic, but Danielle and Owain have also been busy as part of the Optometry Independent Prescribing Scheme. 7 optometrists in Cwm Taf Morgannwg have undertaken qualifications enabling them to diagnose, treat and prescribe eye conditions within the local community.
Timothy Palmer, Independent Optometry Advisor at Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board said, 'Since the service began in October last year, over 300 patients have been treated by Independent Prescribers with 90% of them avoiding referral to the GP or the hospital'
Their efforts have been particularly important in relieving the strain on the overstretched hospital eye care services, as well as making access to enhanced care for eye disease more accessible and convenient for the local community.
